Back to Self Hosting an Instance
“Dear Reader, I have started a self hosted calckey firefish server.”
As I wrote in an earlier post, I still want to try running my own instance(s) because I have become enamored with the idea of owning my own data.
Earlier in the year I looked into running my own mastodon instance, but after trying to install one on a Digital Ocean droplet failed miserably, I ran a partial self-hosted instance via masto.host. Quickly I realized that the amount of disk space needed (even for one active user) was simply ridiculous, so I migrated my account to https://mstdn.social/.
While I have been content as a user on this instance, the urge to run my own instance(s) remained.
What is calckey firefish?
As written on the firefish website:
Forked from Misskey and made by a passionate team of developers, Firefish is all about listening to its community and making people happy with great software.
Quite how I found calckey firefish, I cannot remember, but the installation was deceptively easy (see:
ubuntu install).
Running your own instance is not without a price, literally about 30 USD/month, but it is very satisfying. Slowly but surely I am learning more and more about the possibilities of calckey firefish and my fun in the socials has returned.
The calckey firefish team has some big plans and code/database changes planned:

Set up of my calckey firefish server
At Digital Ocean I am using a Droplet and Spaces (CDN). In general, I use about 30-40% of memory, about 2-4% CPU and I’m at about 20% of used disk space. I will look into how much the disk space increases, because with all images going into a CDN Spaces, it should – in theory – not use this much disk space.
Droplet specs:
- 4 GB Memory
- 80 GB Disk
- CPU 2 cores
- Ubuntu 22.10 x64
What about Pixelfed?
For a few weeks now, I have stopped posting photos on instagram, but I am still active with their Stories. I have started actively posting (and interacting) on
pixelfed. For now I have an account on the main instance and I am slowly importing my instagram posts, and when this service develops further, I might (a) run my own pixelfed instance, or (b) incorporate all photo posts into my calckey firefish home.
