Unfamiliar Faces / Old Familiar Faces
Familiar & unfamiliar faces, people you have seen throughout the years, yet you do not know them
Unless you walk up to them and ask them directly you will probably never get to know them
Whenever I travel by bus in Leiden (practically daily as I work there), I see many people: on the bus, on the streets, at the train station. People whose faces I recognize, yet I do not know them personally. Almost always a particular line pops up in my head, from the song Anatevka in the musical Fiddler on the Roof:

These people have old familiar faces, which is no wonder because I have been walking and travelling around in Leiden ever since I started at university back in 1994. I have no idea if I will every truly meet them, yet I take comfort in recognizing them.
