What’s the most unique thing you’ve ever used a book for? (Emergency door stop? Insulation? Building blocks?)

Deb, Booking Through Thursday

When I first started working as a temp at a publisher’s1, they had the old style big computer monitor. Changing the height of the desks these monitors sat on was not possible. So to get the monitor to a working height, we used books — of course!

Thing is, the books we were using (mainly because of their thickness) were2 quite expensive: we had one or two editions of the standard reference work in the field of Islamic studies, Encyclopaedia of Islam, 2nd Edition, underneath our monitors. I think there are quite a few scholars who would shake their heads in anger that we used these gorgeous tomes of academic standing.

Thankfully, we no longer have to use books to change the height of our monitor, but I miss looking at these books on a daily basis while I’m working on quite different publication formats now!

  1. I still work at this publishing house, almost 17 years later.
  2. Still are, in fact!
